Breakout
A port faster than the endpoint it serves can be broken out when the speeds divide cleanly. That raises the usable port count. Two-tier capacity goes as the square of the port count, so it moves the tier boundary a long way.

Coding matters more than it looks. A switch may refuse a transceiver that is not coded for it, and that is one of six axes that have to agree before a link comes up. The others are form factor, reach, fibre type, fibre connector and ferrule polish. See optics compatibility.
Notes
Verified: 1RU, 3.6 Tbps, 48 x 1/10/25G SFP28 with 6 x 40/100G uplinks. Serves two roles: aggregation for the 93108TC-FX3 out-of-band switches, whose uplinks run at 25G to land here, and in-band management where the host NICs are 25G. Use n93600cd-gx instead when in-band NICs run at 100G, since these access ports top out at 25G.
