Breakout
A port faster than the endpoint it serves can be broken out when the speeds divide cleanly. That raises the usable port count. Two-tier capacity goes as the square of the port count, so it moves the tier boundary a long way.

Coding matters more than it looks. A switch may refuse a transceiver that is not coded for it, and that is one of six axes that have to agree before a link comes up. The others are form factor, reach, fibre type, fibre connector and ferrule polish. See optics compatibility.
Notes
Verified: 2RU, 64x400G QSFP-DD plus 2x1/10G SFP+, 51.2 Tb/s, 1,324 W typical. QSFP-DD also supports native 200G, 100G, and 40G. A direct radix match to the QM9700, so switch counts are directly comparable against the InfiniBand build. Supports congestion-aware per-packet (PLB) and flowlet (DLB) load balancing, and NVIDIA Spectrum-X adaptive routing is available via add-on license when paired with NVIDIA SuperNICs — this is a validated NVIDIA combination, not a workaround. Note the QSFP-DD cages: NVIDIA OSFP optics do not fit. Power is unverified.
